Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pilates a Cardio Workout?

Pilates is classed as a muscle strengthening activity. It’s a form of light resistance and weight-bearing activity.

The movements are performed at a slow steady pace. Once movements and breathing has been perfected this pace can increased and therefore increase the heart rate. Pilates is a great form of exercise to do along side some form of aerobic exercises such as walking, running, cycling and swimming.

Can I improve my cardio fitness by doing Pilates?

Absolutely.

By practising Pilates you will improve your ability to perform, engage muscles, improve your posture and balance thus increasing your ability to be able to do other exercises further such as walk/run further and faster, dance better, cycle for longer etc

How often should I come?

Pilates is practised anywhere from once a week to once a day, but twice a week is common and is what I would suggest.

Even if you attend just one session a week you should try to do a few minutes each day or every other day.

I’m a beginner – does that matter?

It is suitable for both beginners and for people who already exercise regularly.

Because Pilates exercises can be modified to provide a gentle or a harder exercise it is great for all abilities.

What should I bring?

You may want to bring with you a Pilates mat (Pilates mats are similar to yoga mats but thicker) and a bottle of water. Other equipment used are resistance band, massage balls, Pilates small ova ball, these can be provided but if you have your own you’re welcome to bring them.

Am I the right age to do Pilates?

Pilates is popular with athletes, dancers, gymnasts and others who are physically in their prime but it is suitable for almost any age. Clients age ranges between teenage years to seventies and many can still do Pilates in the 80s and 90s. Many clients are in the older years. Pilates is one of the best known ways to ward off the infirmities of old age. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “you are only as old as you feel” or “age is just a number”. The fitness, flexibility and strength of our bodies can determine our youth and vitality.

As Joseph Pilates said “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young “

Is Pilates only for women?

Pilates was invented by a man, Joseph Pilates, originally for his own benefit. Many athletes including footballers, rugby players and other professional athletes men and women practice Pilates.

Is Pilates like Yoga?

Both Pilates and yoga and mind-body exercises. Yoga is spiritual. Pilates is a more dynamic exercise and focus more on strengthening the deeper layers of muscles. There are similarities partly because Joseph Pilates has studied yoga when he was first developing his method.

If you have time there’s no reason why you should not try both and do both.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing which allows freedom to move but that is not too baggy. Avoid clothes that have embellishments.

Pilates moves involves transferring from standing to exercising lying down on your front and on your back, on your hands and knees and on your side.

Pilates can be practised with or without socks and if you have a pair that has some grip on the bottom of them this will mean that you don’t slip around during practice
